In his speech at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum, Vice Premier Ding Xue-xiang said China is willing to work with the international community to practice the concept of open, equitable and non-discriminatory international science and technology cooperation, and build together a global science and technology community.
The country will explore a new model of mutually beneficial global cooperation in scientific and technological innovation and break down barriers that restrict the flow of knowledge, technology, talent and other innovative factors, to jointly create an open innovation ecosystem.
Yin Li, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, said the capital will intensify efforts to improve its innovation capabilities, accelerate the construction of world-leading science and technology parks, increase investment in basic research and achieve advances in core technologies in key fields.
Data from the Ministry of Science and Technology showed that China’s research and development investment exceeded 3.3 trillion yuan (455.4 billion U.S. dollars) in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 8.1 percent, and research spending fundamental reached 221.2 billion yuan, an increase of 9.3 percent percent over the previous year.
China’s strength in scientific and technological innovation has taken a great leap in recent years. Marco Alemán, deputy director general of the World Intellectual Property Organization, said that China is an innovation powerhouse that contributes to global growth and sustainable development.
According to the WIPO, the country is a world leader in innovation, ranking 12th in the 2023 Global Innovation Index, and at the end of last year it had 24 of the top 100 science and technology clusters worldwide, ranking first in the world for the first time ever.
