Milan and Leipzig complete the round of 16
MADRID, 2 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Portuguese Benfica thrashed (6-1) this Wednesday the Israeli Maccabi Haifa and entered the round of 16 as first in Group H by having more goals away from home than the French PSG, who beat the Italian Juventus (2-1) , in matches corresponding to the last day of the Champions League group stage.
The Portuguese team returned to the round of 16 with a rout that closed with a goal from Joao Mario in 93′, key to securing first place. Tied for everything with PSG, Roger Schmidt’s men relegated the Parisian team to second place, having a greater goal difference as visitors.
The Lisbon team began winning with Ramos’ goal and, although Maccabi managed to equalize from a penalty through Chery, already in the second half, the Portuguese overwhelmed the locals with goals from Musa, Grimaldo, Rafa Silva, Henrique Araujo and finally Joao Mario.
For its part, PSG fell to second place in the group despite the victory suffered in Turin. Goals from Mbappe and Nuno Mendes were worth the win, in an even match in which they went ahead with a goal from the Parisian striker, who already has 40 goals in the Champions League. Bonucci equalized for his team just before the break, but Nuno Mendes saved the first ball he touched after going onto the field in the second half and made it 2-1.
Meanwhile, England’s Chelsea took the lead in Group E thanks to a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge against Dinamo Zagreb. The Croats started by taking the lead thanks to Petkovic’s goal, but Sterling and Zakaria came from behind in a game that, through water, left the Austrians out of European competition.
On the other hand, the effectiveness of Italian Milan, but above all, of a stellar Giroud, classified the Italians as second in this group, after beating Austrian Salzburg 4-0, which will go on to play in the Europa League. Pioli’s men return to the round of 16 of Europe’s top competition after eight years without doing so thanks to Giroud’s brace and goals from Krunic and Junior Messias.
In addition, in Group G of Seville, the English Manchester City confirmed their leadership with a resounding 3-1 victory against the Seville team, while the German Borussia Dortmund, who already had secured second place, could not get past the tie ( 1-1) against the Danish Copenhagen, which says goodbye to Europe.
Finally, in Group F, the German RB Leipzig qualified for the round of 16 as second in the group behind Real Madrid, after beating Shakhtar Donetsk 0-4 in Warsaw with goals from Nkunku, André Silva, Szoboszlai and, recently entered the field, from the Spanish Dani Olmo.
