Births in Spain have dropped in the first two months of 2023 compared to the previous year to 51,929, which is 676 less than in the same period of 2022, according to estimates published this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). ). However, this figure is higher than that reached in the same period of 2021, with 48,251 births, 3,678 more.

The INE has also released the death figures in the first 13 weeks of 2023, when 124,628 people died in Spain, 11 fewer than in the same period of 2022, according to the estimate of weekly deaths. This is the lowest figure in those same weeks since 2019, before the start of the pandemic.

In the case of births, last January 2023 27,185 children were born in Spain, 488 fewer than in the same month of 2022, which is 1.8% less. In any case, there are 3,314 more than in January 2021 (13.9%).

Compared to February, a total of 24,717 children were born in Spain, according to the monthly estimate of the INE. This figure represents 2,556 fewer births than in February 2022 but is 337 more than the data reached in February 2021 when, 11 months after the start of the pandemic, 24,380 children were born.

For years, in the first two months, 51,929 births have been registered this 2023, compared to 52,605 in 2022 and above 48,251 in 2021. Since 2017, the number has been decreasing progressively, with 62,188 in 2017, 59,700 in 2018 , 58,182 in 2019 and 57,157 in 2020.

As for deaths, if deaths in Spain are compared during the first 13 weeks of each year, compared to the 124,628 estimated for this 2023, there are 124,639 in 2022. The highest figures were reached in 2021 with 129,759 and 2020 with 133,393. In 2018, there were 127,991 deaths and in 2019, 119,916.
