The sale of 100% electric cars increased by 18.6% in Europe until February, while in Germany it fell by 15.4% in the month

Registrations of passenger cars and SUVs in Europe as a whole reached a volume of 2.01 million units in the first two months of the year, which represents a 10.9% increase compared to the same period last year, while that 995,059 units were registered in February, 10.2% more than in the same month of 2023, according to data published by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

By type of engine, the sale of 100% electric cars in Europe increased by 18.6% in the year-on-year rate accumulated until February, up to 252,072 units, while in the second month of the year 131,223 vehicles of this type were delivered ( 10.3%).

In this regard, the decrease in Germany last month stands out, with 15.3% fewer sales of 100% electric vehicles (27,479 units), and 1.3% so far this year, with 49,953 units.

Likewise, the Spanish market registered an increase in the sale of BEVs (battery electric vehicles) of 14.9% in the two months of the year (7,180 units), and 15.4% in February.

Among the top-5 countries, France is the one that has grown the most in electric vehicle registrations until February (33.9%; 45,842 units), followed by the United Kingdom (21.3%; 35,926 units), while Italy registers a decrease of 2.7% until February, with 7,968 BEV units registered.

Meanwhile, in the first two months of the year, 152,641 plug-in hybrid passenger cars and SUVs were sold, that is, 17.9% more than in the same period of 2023. Likewise, in February alone, 72,376 units of this type were registered (12 %).

As for gasoline cars, 720,239 units were sold throughout the year (4.5%), while in February 354,776 units were delivered, which represents a 5.9% increase.

For its part, the sale of hybrids maintained its growth, with an increase of 24.2% in February, up to 287,394 units, and 23% in the accumulated, with 584,463 units.

In the first two months of the year, 239,852 diesel cars were sold, 5.5% less than in the same period of the previous year, while in February 119,428 units were registered (-5.1%).

With these figures, gasoline cars achieved a market share of 35.8% in Europe as a whole in the first two months of the year, while hybrids had a relative weight of 29%, 100% electric cars 12, 5%, diesel 11.9%, plug-in hybrids 7.6% and the remaining 3.1% corresponded to “other fuels”.

By brands, the market was led in February by the German Volkswagen, which registered 96,291 cars in Europe, 0.6% less in year-on-year terms, followed by Toyota (70,149 units; 12.4%) and Peugeot, which with 58,080 units (8.5%), closed the ‘top 3’.

In the accumulated of the first two months of the year, the market leader in Europe is also Volkswagen (192,642 units; -2.1%), followed by Toyota (149,948 units; 11.1%) and Skoda (119,642 units; 16 .7%).
