The leadership of the PSOE has no intention of taking disciplinary measures against the president of Castilla La Mancha and general secretary in this community for his criticism of the party and the Amnesty Law agreed with the independence groups.
Therefore, they are not contemplating opening a file against Page, according to what sources from Ferraz told Europa Press, despite the statements that have sparked a public confrontation between the socialist baron and the main leaders of the PSOE.
Page, the main critical voice within the party against Amnesty and the different agreements with the Catalan and Basque independence movement, went one step further by pointing out that the PSOE was “on the outskirts of the Constitution, about to step on the constitutional border”, after that the Government agreed to limit the crimes of terrorism that are excluded from the Amnesty Law. In this sense he pointed out that “there is no good and bad terrorism.”
Page’s words provoked an immediate reaction from the socialist leadership, which usually keeps a low profile when there is a dissenting voice within the party. The Secretary of Organization, Santos Cerdán, was the first to speak out, pointing out that the majority is clear about what terrorism is and Page should also know it.
“All terrorism is bad, García Page. The problem raised by others is, what is terrorism? I think the vast majority of us know it and you should know it,” he wrote in a message in X collected by Europa Press.
Furthermore, in an informal conversation with several regional presidents of the PP in Fitur, Page said that they are about to extradite him for his criticism, to which the president of the Valencian Community, Carlos Mazón, replied, laughing: “But “Nothing happens, then they give you amnesty.”
“That’s what they told me the other day in a meeting. I say, ‘they will be children of…’,” continued Page, while the president of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, pointed out: “You keep them nervous all day.” Finally, Page settled the conversation by revealing his situation in the PSOE: “I suffer that you can’t imagine. What the PSOE has done is extremely tense. Throw out every God who opposes it.”
In recent years, the PSOE has expelled the former president of the Community of Madrid, Joaquín Leguina, from its ranks in December 2022, considering that he had requested the vote for the PP candidate in the Madrid elections held a year earlier, Isabel Diaz Ayuso.
Last September, the former general secretary of the PSOE of Euskadi, Nicolás Redondo Terreros, was expelled under the accusation of repeated contempt for the party’s acronym for his statements about the possibility of Sánchez agreeing with Junts on an Amnesty Law to favor the former Catalan president. Carles Puigdemont.
This Thursday, one day after Page’s words, the first vice president and deputy general secretary of the PSOE, María Jesús Montero, rejected them by pointing out that “they do not correspond to reality.”
Furthermore, when asked about whether Page still has a place in the PSOE, the party’s ‘number two’ said that “it is not good, it is not appropriate that this notoriety comes from confronting the strategies of the Government and the party.” . Immediately afterwards she left the door open: “From then on everyone has to make their own reflection,” she pointed out.
Although the PSOE has raised its tone and has responded publicly, at this moment it is not on the table to initiate a disciplinary file against the leader, the only regional president of the PSOE who has an absolute majority.
Several socialist ministers have joined the criticism of Montero and Cerdán, such as the head of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, who said that he was the one who was on the outskirts of the PSOE. In turn, the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, said that these types of statements do not favor either the PSOE or Page himself and advocated discussing the discrepancies “within the party.”
Also the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who censored the words of the Castilian president of La Mancha, stating that the PSOE has been “from minute 1” with the Constitution and whoever places him on the outskirts of it is unaware of socialist history.
