MADRID, 18 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The English Manchester City was designated this Monday as the best club of the 2021-2022 season, an award framed in the Ballon d’Or gala organized by the French sports magazine ‘France Football’ and in which it beat Liverpool and Real Madrid .
Pep Guardiola’s team, which took over from Chelsea, only won the English Premier League title last year, although they had up to six players nominated for the individual award.
That number of candidates also had the ‘reds’, who were one victory away from winning everything and had to settle for the FA Cup and the League Cup. The Madrid team, however, surprisingly finished third, despite having five nominees, four of them (Karim Benzema, Thibaut Courtois, Vinicius Jr and Luka Modric) in the ‘Top 10’, and having won the Champions League.
In addition, the Senegalese striker Sadio Mané, currently at the German Bayern Munich, was awarded the Sócrates Trophy in recognition of his solidarity work off the pitch.
