The Prosecutor’s Office for Hate and Anti-Discrimination Crimes has opened criminal investigation proceedings into the tweets of the Vox councilor in the Valencia City Council Cecilia Herrero, denounced by the municipal group Compromís as “racist” and “xenophobic”, as confirmed public ministry sources.
Last April, the Compromís councilor in the Valencia City Council Lucía Beamud informed the Prosecutor’s Office of the “attack” that Herrero carried out against the human rights activist and former deputy of the Madrid Assembly Serigne Mbaye to whom she told in a message on a social network: “You need to go back to your country.”
Compromís informed the Prosecutor’s Office that these attitudes “cannot go unpunished, especially from a public representative”, which is why he considered that the public ministry “should take the pertinent legal actions” as this message could incur a hate crime typified in the Code. Penalty that sanctions those who “publicly encourage, promote or incite directly or indirectly hatred, hostility, discrimination or violence against a group, part of it or against a specific person by reason of their membership in that group, as is the case “.
Subsequently, on May 2, the group announced that it was expanding the complaint against the Vox councilor “after finding more racist and xenophobic messages” issued by Herrero on social networks. “We cannot allow these statements to be made in the city and go unpunished,” Compromís spokesperson Papi Robles then declared about Herrero’s messages.
And he added: “We are clear that this councilor is a racist and not only because of her comment against a human rights activist but also because of the history she has on her social networks,” Beamud stated. “It is more than evident racism,” she remarked.
