– Living Well Digitally: Global Initiative Launched by NUS Center for a Trusted Internet and Community Powered by DQ
SINGAPORE, April 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — On April 17, 2024, the Center for Trustworthy Internet and Community (CTIC) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) launched an innovative new initiative, “Living Well Digitally” (https://ctic.nus.edu.sg/living-well-digitally/). Developed in partnership with the DQ Institute and in support of Infocomm Media Development Authority’s (IMDA) Digital for Life movement, the initiative aims to educate, engage and empower people around the world with the knowledge and tools to navigate the complexities of the digital world, promoting a more balanced and informed digital lifestyle.
The “Living Well Digitally” initiative features three key components:
Developed by a team of NUS-CTIC researchers (led by Professor Audrey Yue, Professor Natalie Pang, Professor Zhang Renwen, in collaboration with Professor Lim Ee-Peng of Singapore Management University, as well as Dr Yuhyun Park of DQ Institute), the DWIF was developed over two years of research, refinement and validation. This included consultations with 23 experts (policy makers, social service agencies and academics) from Singapore, China, the United States and the United Kingdom, followed by pilot testing with more than 1,300 combined in Singapore and around the world. This was followed by a cross-country population survey with more than 4,000 people in four cities of Singapore, Seoul, Shanghai and London.
To celebrate the public launch of the “Living Well Digitally” initiative, CTIC organized an official launch event at NUS for stakeholders from ministries and government organizations including the Ministry of Communications and Information and IMDA, social service agencies such as TOUCH Community Services and leading technology companies such as Meta and ByteDance (TikTok).
“In today’s digital landscape, prioritizing digital well-being is essential. With the Living Well Digitally initiative, we are building a movement to educate and empower people in Singapore and around the world to take ownership of their digital experiences and cultivate connections both online and offline,” said Professor Audrey Yue, Principal Investigator of the project, Deputy Director of CTIC, Head of Department and Professor of Communications and New Media at NUS. “By introducing the Digital Wellbeing Indicators Framework and the Live Well Digital platform, we hope to provide individuals, social workers, educators, technology corporations and policymakers with an instrument that can help everyone ‘live well digitally’ in the era digital”.
In her keynote address, Guest of Honor Mdm Rahayu Mahzam, Principal Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Law, highlighted the importance of digital wellbeing and conscious use of technologies for people from all backgrounds, saying: “Now Whether you identify as a parent, educator, or technology professional, it is crucial that we think about our approach and relationship with technologies consciously.”
Mdm Rahahyu Mahzam added: “We hope this toolkit adds to the Digital for Life movement’s range of resources to educate, engage and empower Singaporeans to strengthen their digital wellbeing and resilience.”
During the event, the research team launched the “Living Well Digitally” website and showcased the digital well-being assessment tool powered by DQ. “Powered by DQ” is a seal of trust that a digital literacy intervention is credible and impactful according to the IEEE DQ Global Standards (IEEE 3527.1TM), providing the NUS-CTIC framework with impact measurement and alignment tools to identify areas of strength and weaknesses to obtain practical knowledge and further development of initiatives.
