The project enhances the sustainable energy transition of La Palma and promotes the port of Tazacorte as a decarbonization center in the Canary Islands
SANTA CRUZ DE LA PALMA, Spain, Dec. 29, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — GCL SI and Ocean Sun once again and recently joined forces to successfully complete the BOOST floating solar demonstrator (“BOOST” or “the project”). On December 14, 2023, the project was completed in the port of Tazacorte in La Palma, with an installed power of 270 kWp. BOOST showcases the utilization of the GCL MS/60GT Ocean Sun photovoltaic modules (“the module”) and aims to drive innovation in floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) technology. Celebrating their fifth year of collaboration, GCL SI and Ocean Sun continue to push the boundaries of renewable energy innovation.
“Long-term collaboration with GCL SI and other partners and independent research institutes has been fundamental to the qualification and profitability of this new PV module installation technology for fresh and salt water. With GCL SI’s growing manufacturing capacity, We look forward to serving the growing international FPV market,” said Børge Bjørneklett, CEO of Ocean Sun.
Since 2018, Ocean Sun and GCL SI have forged a strong partnership, collaborating closely to create a PV module designed specifically for Ocean Sun’s membrane-based floating solar solution. This partnership has involved a rigorous testing process, jointly developed by Ocean Sun, GCL SI and TÜV Rheinland. The modules underwent extensive examination, including immersion of the panels in seawater heated under a voltage of 1,500 V for an extended period, which ensured the impeccable quality and durability of the design.
The solar module is constructed of waterproof materials for long-lasting use in moisture-prone areas. Its frameless design reduces the use of aluminum, reducing raw material costs by almost 10%, making it a more affordable and durable option for solar installations.
The flat back surface of the module allows for optimal contact with the membrane, effectively reducing operating temperatures and significantly increasing the overall power output of the system. It also underwent rigorous benchmarking at DNV laboratories in Singapore. The testing involved an extensive comparison with ground-mount systems and other floating technologies, specifically focusing on validating the superior cooling effects offered by the membrane solution.
GCL SI has been actively involved providing on-site support throughout the project. Additionally, they will take this opportunity to conduct further testing on the panels, taking a closer look at how the modules perform in the face of larger waves and exposure to salt water. This collaborative effort involves the expertise of GCL SI’s technical team, with the goal of gaining valuable insights and improving module resilience in challenging marine conditions.
Additionally, Ocean Sun and GCL SI have a history of successful collaboration on previous projects. A notable example is the installation in Magat, Philippines, in 2019. Additionally, they joined forces for a major 2 MWp FPV project at the Banja Dam in Albania. This project was successfully launched in January 2023, further cementing the partnership between the two brands.
