The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, defended this Thursday the State’s participation in Telefónica, which he described as a “strategic operation” related to defense and cybersecurity.
In an interview on Rac1 collected by Europa Press, he referred to the purchase of 10% of Telefónica shares for a cost of 2,000 million by the Government.
The operation “has to do with digital transformation, it has to do with the fact that right now telecommunications are closely linked to security, defense, cybersecurity and the development of the entire digital economy in which the economies are immersed.” particularly Westerners.
He has referred to other countries such as Germany, Italy and France, where the states also have a “significant participation in these telecommunications operators”, and has assured that the Spanish initiative is a good operation that has been understood by the markets, in reference to the good reaction in the stock market.
“It is simply the confirmation that we are talking about a strategic sector for security, defense and the entire digitalization process that we have to address,” he added.
