In a joint statement after meeting on the sidelines of the European summit, the leaders of the four member states underline their “willingness” to recognize Palestine.
“We have said that we will do it when it can make a positive contribution and the appropriate circumstances arise,” says the text agreed between Sánchez and the prime ministers of Slovenia, Robert Golob, Malta, Robert Abela, and Ireland, Leo Varadkar, who announced his resignation this week.
There are currently nine member states that recognize Palestine. Eight of them – Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Romania and Slovakia – took the step in 1988, before entering the EU, while Sweden did so alone in 2014, fulfilling an electoral promise. of the social democrats.
