MADRID, 8 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Specialized Environmental Unit of the State Attorney General’s Office has opened investigation proceedings into the dumping of pellets on the Galician coast, as sources from the institution have confirmed to Europa Press.

In this sense, they specify that this unit already opened a file to monitor the situation on January 4.

The presence of small plastic balls dumped into the sea by the merchant ship ‘Toconao’ began to be recorded in areas of A Mariña, Lucense, in sandy areas of the municipalities of Foz and Burela, at the end of last week. The trail of these microplastics goes from the southernmost areas of the community, such as Nigrán, to the north, to municipalities in Mariña, Lugo. At different points work is being done on collection. This Monday, the Xunta estimated that there were 30 affected beaches, “with a testimonial presence” of these microplastics.

Asturias has also activated this Monday the Territorial Contingency Plan for Accidental Marine Pollution of the Principality of Asturias (Placampa) due to the presence of ‘pellets’ on several beaches on the western Asturian coast.
