The president of the Xunta, Alfonso Rueda, has announced the call for regional elections for Sunday, February 18, a decision that he has framed in his objective of guaranteeing “stability in Galicia.”

In the press conference after the Council meeting, Rueda explained that next Tuesday, December 26, the Official Gazette of Galicia (DOG) will publish the decree with the call.

“These elections are called once the budgets for 2024 are approved,” highlighted Rueda, who maintained that “the good progress of Galicia will not be interrupted.”

Rueda has thus cleared up the mystery about the date on which the elections will take place, the first ones he will attend as the candidate of the Popular Party for the Presidency of the Xunta after the departure of Alberto Núñez Feijóo to Madrid to lead the Popular Party.

Precisely, Rueda himself has reported that this Thursday he has spoken with both the leader of his party and the Lehendakari Íñigo Urkullu to inform them of his decision. And since 2009, Galicia and the Basque Country had called the elections together.

However, although he said that he spoke this Thursday with Feijóo, in his appearance and in response to questions from the media, the Galician president has disassociated his decision from the leadership of the PP.
