The president of the United States, Joe Biden, has approved extending the national emergency on the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, at a time of tension due to threats from Russia about a nuclear war in the framework of the invasion of Ukraine.
Biden has sent a letter to the presidents of the House of Representatives and the Senate, Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris, respectively, to communicate the decision, which falls under section 202d of the National Emergencies Act.
In his letter, published by the White House, the president has highlighted that this law “provides for the automatic end of a national emergency unless, in the 90 days prior to the declaration deadline, the president publishes in the Federal Register and transmit to Congress a note stating that the emergency will be extended.
“In line with this clause, I have sent to the Federal Register for publication the note that affirms that the national emergency regarding the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction declared in executive order 12,938 of November 14, 1994 will continue in force beyond the 14 November 2022”, he riveted.
