MADRID, 1 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has assured that Pope Francis’ statements about the alleged participation of members of Russian minorities in the war in Ukraine are “not Christian at all”, in a new criticism from Moscow of the Pontiff.

The Pope had pointed out the “cruelty” that Ukraine faces with the Russian offensive in an interview with the American Jesuit newspaper ‘America’ in which he assured that “the cruelest are from Russia”, referring specifically to “Chechens and Buryats”.

“Recently, there were some incomprehensible statements, not at all Christian, in which two nationalities of the Russian Federation were included in the same category of those from whom atrocities can be expected,” Lavrov said, at a press conference collected by the TASS agency. “Without a doubt, it does not increase the credibility of the Holy See,” he added.

Despite criticism from Moscow, the Pope reiterated this week his call for peace for the “tormented Ukraine” during the general audience he led on Wednesday.
