A total of 19,887 migrants have arrived irregularly in Spain so far this year, 13,029 more people (that is, 190%) than in the same period of 2023 (6,858), according to the latest balance sheet from the Ministry of the Interior. date of May 2, collected by Europa Press. Of the total number of people who have entered Spain from January to May 2, 2024, 15,982 have done so through the Canary Islands by sea.
Specifically, from January 1 to May 2, 18,930 migrants have arrived by sea in Spain, 189.1% more than the same period in 2023 (6,547). They have done so through 454 vessels, 107 more than the previous year (347).
Of the total number of migrants who have arrived by sea, 15,982 have entered the Canary Islands, 369.9% more (12,581) than in the same period of the previous year, when 3,401 arrived. These have arrived aboard 242 vessels, 214.3% more than in 2023, when 77 arrived.
Meanwhile, 2,947 migrants have arrived in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands by sea, which is 4.7% less than in 2023, when 3,091 arrived. In this case, they have done so in 211 vessels, 19.5% less than last year, when 262 vessels arrived on the coasts of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
On the other hand, from January 1 to May 2 there have been no irregular arrivals of migrants to Ceuta by sea, compared to the same period last year, when a total of 16 people entered through four boats. .
In the case of Melilla, there has been an irregular entry, 97.4% less compared to the 39 migrants who did so a year ago during this period.
However, arrivals by land have increased in both autonomous cities, with a total of 957 people arriving (947 in Ceuta – 246.9% more – and 10 in Melilla – 73.7% less – ), 207.7% more than last year, when 311 people arrived this way.
