MADRID, 2 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has assured that his dinner with prosecutors affiliated with the majority conservative association was “absolutely correct and institutional” and in it he defended the “independence of prosecutors.”

Feijóo has thus justified this private meeting, to which he was invited by the association and which ‘El País’ has announced this Tuesday. The meeting was held on May 18 at the Claridge hotel in Madrid and in it the leader of the ‘populares’ would have informed the prosecutors that he will undertake an urgent counter-reform if he governs in order, through a bill, to be able to repeal some regulations approved by the current Executive, such as the reform of the crime of sedition. The prosecutors, for their part, would have shown their support for the PP against the “drift” of the Government, according to the aforementioned newspaper.

Feijóo has indicated that he took advantage of the meeting to explain to the prosecutors his model for the Attorney General’s Office, to which they asked questions to which he answered “quietly and freely.”

“It was an absolutely correct and institutional meeting, to which I have been invited,” he insisted, to report that he also told them that he believes “in the prosecutor’s career” and “in the independence of prosecutors.”

In this sense, Feijóo assured them that he will “never” appoint a State Attorney General to be part of his government or “in positions of the prosecutor structure people who have been out of public office for less than five years, a politic charge”.

“Therefore, the independence of the Prosecutor’s Office seems decisive to me. That was what I transferred to the prosecutors,” stressed the leader of the PP, who considers that this type of dinner occurs with “some regularity” by invitations from associations. “I have also gone to dinner with other associations that have invited me with absolute tranquility and transparency”, he concluded.
