FRANKFURT (GERMANY), 21 Oct. (DPA/EP) –

The French Minister of Finance, Bruno Le Maire, has admitted that relations with Germany have entered a “reflection phase”, although he has claimed the importance of maintaining this historic axis, key in recent years for the adoption of policies in the within the EU.

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, who meet in Brussels for the European Council, have met again for next week, but speculation about their current degree of relations has increased as a result of the postponement to January of the traditional intergovernmental consultations.

“There is a scheduling problem,” Le Maire alleged in statements to the ‘Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung’ newspaper, confident that this additional time will allow the two parties to prepare better and “achieve better results.”

The Franco-German alliance was “always at the center of the European unification process and will continue to be,” said the French minister, who sees “no alternative” to this tandem. “I think that a mistake of the Franco-German friendship would be to try to put aside the differences,” he added.
