Minister Sira Rego’s sector also provides its support

The former leader of the Andalusian federation of IU Antonio Maíllo has been proclaimed the new leader of the formation, replacing former minister Alberto Garzón, with 79% of the votes of the elected members of the Federal Coordinator (its highest management body), according to training sources have indicated.

Therefore, apart from the Maíllo sector in this body, which held more than 53% of said Coordination after the primaries for militancy, the favorable vote of sector representatives of the Minister of Youth and Children, Sira Rego, has also joined which clearly prevailed in the process and brings together more than 23% of this body.

In this way, his appointment has brought together a high consensus of the Federal Coordinator and opens the way for an integration executive that provides stability to the organization. Maíllo himself has promised that his executive will be “plural” and will integrate the four candidates who have fought for the leadership of the organization.

Meanwhile, Maíllo’s election has only gathered 2% of the vote against while 19% of the members of the federal Coordinator have opted for abstention. Also in this forum were the other two sectors that question the relationship with Sumar, that of the IU Madrid coordinator, Álvaro Aguilera, and the representative of the critical sector José Antonio García Rubio.

Previously, Sira Rego has conveyed to Maíllo, who has confirmed her continuity as minister, her “militant commitment” to assume the tasks entrusted to her by her organization, showing her pride in representing her in the Government.

With this, he becomes the sixth IU coordinator in 38 years of training history and returns to the political front line after resigning in 2019 as IU coordinator in Andalusia, a position he held since 2013, to return to his position as professor of secondary.

His victory once again places the PCE and especially the Andalusian federation, the most important, as leaders of the organization.

A supporter of broad confluences on the left, first with Podemos in 2019 in the Andalusian case (with the Adelanta Andalucía brand) and now with Sumar, Maíllo has promised a leadership that will be in close contact with the militancy, he has praised his predecessors in the position and has stressed that his organization is “active and alive”.

The IU assembly was attended by the secretary of the Organization Santos Cerdán, his counterpart in Sumar, Lara Hernández and the person also responsible for the Organization of Más Madrid, Gabriel Ortega. In addition, the general secretary of CCOO, Unai Sordo, and congratulatory videos from the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, and the leader of UGT, Pepe Álvarez, attended.
